Insightful Experience at Slough Aspire

I was grateful enough to get the opportunity to work at Slough Aspire courtesy of Baylis Court School and Learning to Work. It was a very insightful experience into the world of work and has taught me how to communicate with business people, behave in a professional way, dress to impress and use appropriate resources.
Before coming here, I had not heard of Slough Aspire nor knew what they were or what they do. When I was told I received a placement I wondered what kind of business they were and how they operate to make a profit. So, I googled them and found that they are an event management company that hire their venue space to local businesses and I was intrigued to go and see how they do it, as I have never come across this type of business before.
After working with them, I have come to know Slough Aspire very well through working on a project which required me to keep a data log of all the companies that have hired this venue space. This project has enabled me to do in depth research about the company internally and externally allowing me to gain information that helped me integrate into the company. I also learned how to complete Tech checks on the computers and sound equipment which enhanced my IT skills. The highlight of my week was being able to attend the Political Working Lunch run by the Thames Valley Chamber of Commerce Group at the Microsoft HQ in Reading. I was very fortunate to meet Alok Sharma MP of Employment and hear his views on the Education system put in place for school leavers. He addressed topics such as pressures put on young people by schools to go down the university route, forgetting apprenticeships, how employers can support older workers to retain them and the knowledge they hold. During this meeting I had the incredible chance to meet various big companies and talk to them about what I am doing here at Slough Aspire and gained great information about their companies and opportunities that they have available for young people like me. So I was able to grab some company details which was fantastic.
I had the pleasure of working with the kind and friendly staff at Slough Aspire that have helped me through my time here and have made it comforting and easy. Its great to see how much Fiona and her team help small local businesses by providing them with the space, resources, advice and opportunities they need to develop but might not be able to get. I would like to thank Fiona for giving me this wonderful opportunity, Alison, Becky and Charlotte for making me feel welcome and for mentoring and guiding me and Tony for helping me gain/extend my skill base. This is an experience I will never forget.
