Assessment Centre Workshop at The Downs POSTED BY Natalia Orlowska, November 2018

On 30th October 2018, 28 students from The Downs School joined employers, AWE, Honda and QA Apprenticeships, for an interactive Assessment Centres workshop led by the Apprenticeship Support & Knowledge’ for Schools and Colleges project, West Berkshire Education Business Partnership and the Berkshire Apprenticeship Service.
The workshop covered what larger employers look for when they recruit young people into their organisations in large groups and helped the students develop skills and knowledge of the recruitment process to improve their chances of being selected at this type of event. Over the course of the morning, the students had talks from the different employers and delivery organisations, including top tips on how to present themselves effectively in person and during telephone interviews. The session culminated in a team work activity, where the students had to work in groups to build a tower out of spaghetti and marshmallows. As you can see our winning team took a very geometric approach to the task!
All the students had signed up for the workshop voluntarily to find out more about apprenticeships and 97% rated the workshop as good or excellent. Some of the great feedback the students gave on the session included:
“I liked that we got walked through what we would experience during an apprenticeship and had a change to do a fun practical”
“I liked that they had a broad range of knowledge collected in the room at any time”
“the experience and real-life tips from people who gone through the same experience”
Overall the majority of students finished the session feeling more confident about both what doing an apprenticeship involved and what they would need to do to be successful during the recruitment process.
Enormous thanks to our business and delivery volunteers Luisa Warren-Price and Nathan Searle from Honda, Nasheta Daniel from QA Apprenticeships, Andy Palin from AWE, Kim Martin from ASK and Michelle Smith from WBEBP who really brought the day alive for the students!
